The history of Alta Vista began in 1872 when Charles H. Lanneau purchased 56 acres near the north shore of the Savannah River. He built a home and servants quarters and then continued to build textile plants. He bought a mill on Reedy River Falls. This French entrepreneur had already amassed significant wealth by trading with both sides during the Civil War. As a successful businessman, employing more than 300 people, he enjoyed a prominent place in society. Soon after the turn of the century, Lanneau suffered some financial difficulties, leading to the sale of his home to a banker named J.W. Norwood. He played a significant role in the growth of the private colleges in the area. He also developed the property, although it was not until his death in 1945 and the end of World War II that his daughter, Mrs. Sapp Funderburk, built additional homes on the property, giving birth to Alta Vista real estate.
